TIPS : Writing Names

Dear Teachers,
How has your first week of school been?
Do you have difficulties with children not knowing how to write their names?
What are your initiatives to help them?
Do you encourage them NICELY? or Do you FORCE them fiercely?

NO NEED TO BE FIERCE! A Preschool Teacher's job is to ASSIST and BE GENTLE. HELP THEM TO LOVE WRITING. And the experience of writing their own names should be an exciting process. MAKE IT FUN!

These are some ways to encourage them to love WRITING, but using NAMES as 1 approach :
  1. Free Writing - based on the LETTER SOUNDS. YOU (teachers) make the letter SOUNDS of the child's first letter in their name. Then the rest is up to them. But YOU have started it correctly
  2. TRACE writing - Do little dots with a marker pen to shape the letter, get the children to trace on them. Refer to image
  3. Use alphabet blocks to form names
  4. Use lego pieces to shape the letter
  5. Use DIY Playdough to shape letters. Or can be anything, and many more creative ideas

REMINDER:
  • Do not get stressed if children does not know how to write names. It is a reminder too for parents to practice at home. Practice does not mean forcing them to copy and write many times. But making learning fun at home, with the same ideas listed above
  • Be GENTLE! Imagine if I ask you to write your name in Japanese letters (when you do not even know Japanese letters) --> DIFFICULT RIGHT? So, the same goes to these children. BE a little bit EMPATHIC!!
I guess, that's all for now. Happy schooling everyone!! xx
